The MSAV celebrates 50 years since the establishment of the Association of Hospital Scientists in Victoria. The Association was incorporated under the Companies Act 1958 (Victoria) on 8 August 1957.

The objects of the Association were to ‘promote and advance in the State of Victoria and elsewhere the welfare and interests of university science graduates and others engaged or working in hospitals, hospital clinical research units, medical research institutions, private medical clinics or other institutions or bodies in any way concerned with clinical medicine and to foster advance and encourage medical and scientific knowledge and research of every description’

The MSAV was formed in 1980 as a result of the amalgamation of the Association of Hospital Scientists in Victoria, the Dietitians Industrial Association of Victoria and the Medical Laboratory Scientists Association of Victoria, and became a trade union registered under the Victorian Trade Union Act 1958 in the same year.
