| Controversial HSU Victorian Branch Amalgamation |

The HSU’s national council met in Sydney on 6 April 2010 and approved a rule change under which the Victorian No. 1 and No. 3 branches of the HSU will merge with the HSU NSW branch to form a new “HSU Eastern Branch” run from Sydney. Around 15,000 Victorian HSU #1 and #3 members will join with the 35,000-strong NSW branch.
Our Branch is not involved in the merger and our Councilors abstained from the vote. HSU National President and NSW general secretary Michael Williamson will remain General Secretary of the new super Eastern Branch. Current HSU National Secretary and Victoria No 3 Branch Secretary Kathy Jackson will become the Executive President of Eastern Branch, reporting to Michael Williamson. Our Branch Councilors asked prior to the vote of National Council whether there had been consultation with the Victorian members who will be affected. National Council was told that there had been workplace meetings of members. However, this is being disputed, with some Vic #1 and #3 branch members claiming the process was undemocratic. Members of the Branches have said that they were not consulted or even aware of the merger, with the vote of Branch Committees of Management going through without a plebiscite of members.
