| Refusing Leave to Our Members |

We recently had to threaten Austin Health with the AIRC unless a member was allowed conference leave entitlements – she had the temerity to apply for leave to go to an overseas scientific conference for which she was paying her own fares, accommodation and registration, and was using annual leave for travel. The fact that she was going to take a holiday as well (not involving skiing) seemed to be an issue. She got the leave.
Members in the public sector are reminded that they have the right to 2 days paid conference leave per year. This includes part-timers. And full time employees are also entitled to 3 days personal development leave. In both cases approval of leave shall not be unreasonably withheld. We encourage members to access their rights under the certified agreement/EBA. The full provisions can be viewed on the website in the member-only area in the Public Sector Agreement (Clauses 31 and 32). |
