MSAV/VPA are participating in the redevelopment of the HSU National Women’s committee. This committee had its first meeting on 1 August 2007 and hopes to have regular teleconferences and face to face meetings throughout the year. Its function will be to examine areas where women are falling behind such as union membership and activism, pay equity, and leadership roles at work, and develop strategies to redress these matters.
We will be collating statistics from our membership database. We expect that the statistics will confirm our view that women are underrepresented in senior positions especially in medical science. Women make up 75% of the occupation of medical scientists, and men 25%. However we expect that the data are likely to show that these percentages are reversed when it comes to women in Grade 4, Principal Scientists, Laboratory Manager and Operations Director/Director positions. The committee will also examine the adverse affects of the IR laws on women and how to combat them.
