25 Sept 08 was the 10th anniversary of the explosion at the gas plant at Longford. The accident killed two workers and injured another eight. WorkSafe prosecuted Esso Australia Pty Ltd, who were convicted and fined $2 million on 30 July 2001.  This remains the biggest single OHS fine in Victorian history.  WorkSafe’s Executive Director of Health and Safety, John Merritt, said in a media release yesterday that “Victoria’s Major Hazard Facilities are now regulated at the highest levels in Australia, if not the world, but we must always remain vigilant and ensure the safety of workers and the public is paramount.”
