The VPA has become aware of a proposal by the APS to introduce degree level training for a ‘psychology assistant’. We do not understand the origin or rationale for such a proposal, or indeed, the duties that such a category of worker would perform, given that ‘psychology assistants’ would not be registered.
The VPA believes that the proper course of action is for more psychologists to be employed, especially clinical psychologist in public mental health services. We welcome members’ feedback on these issues. Further, we are waiting for the release of the recent enquiry into the mental health workforce in Victoria which was undertaken in 2008 by DHS. Dr Patricia Miach was the VPA nominee on the committee which oversaw the inquiry. The Union is about to go into negotiations with the DHS and the VHIA regarding 2 outstanding matters from our public sector EBA – private practice rights for psychologists in the public sector, and revamping the classification and career structure for psychologists, including the creation of a P5 classification.
