Yesterday’s (2 Apr 2009) media widely reported a story about allegations of misappropriation of union funds by officials of the ‘Health Services Union’ in Victoria. The Secretary of our Branch of the Health Services Union (Victoria #4 Branch), Dr. Rosemary Kelly has issued a media statement pointing out that there are four branches of the HSU in Victoria. The media statement went on to say that the findings of the accountancy firm Pitcher Partners relate only to the Health Services Union Victoria #1 Branch not to the Health Services Union at large. The HSU is a loose federation of state-based unions with four branches in Victoria. Each operates autonomously, with its own elected Secretary and Committee of Management and controls its own funds. The HSU #1 Branch covers cooks, cleaners and ancillary workers in the health system. “The HSU #4 Branch of which I am Secretary covers medical scientists, psychologists, pharmacists and other science-based professionals” Dr Kelly said. “There are not now, nor have there ever been, any allegations of impropriety made against the HSU #4 Branch” she stated, “And HSU#4 is not affiliated with the ALP”. “The issues reported in the media relating to findings of misappropriation of funds and a power struggle between officials are contained within the Victoria #1 Branch and have no connection with the Victoria #4 Branch” Dr Kelly pointed out.
