The Registrar of the Psychologists Registration Board of Victoria has written to the VPA following the Board’s review of the legal requirements for provisional registration, and has advised that (a) Provisional Registration is only granted or renewed to enable a person to undertake or complete Board approved supervised practice, or to undertake university placements as part of an Australian Psychology Registration Council (APAC) accredited higher degree. (b) The Board will be writing to all Provisionally Registered Psychologists in Victoria advising that Provisionally Registered psychologists practicing outside these approved pathways must not use the title Provisional Psychologist. The Board has directed provisionally registered psychologists to cease practice by 1 July 2009 in roles that require the use of the title provisional psychologist and which are external to, or in addition to, approved supervised practice or university placement. Dr Ruth Perkins (President of the VPA), Dr Patricia Miach (VPA Committee) and Dr Rosemary Kelly (VPA Executive Officer) have met with the Board Registrar & CEO, Melanie Saba, and Board member, Dr Peter Cook. Among other matters, we discussed the Board’s letter regarding Provisionally Registered Psychologists. The Board’s letter reflects the requirements of the Health Professions Registration Act 2005. Members currently working as P1 provisional psychologists who will be adversely affected by the requirement to cease practice should contact the office. We can assist in negotiating alternative arrangements with employers.
