Southern Health Continuing Care Program Upheaval |

We met this week met with psychologist members affected by the recent decision by the Chief Operating Officer to discontinue the continuing care program which is responsible for sub acute patients. As a result of this decision, which SH conveniently forgot to notify and consult us about, psychologists and dietitians employed at Dandenong Hospital and the Kingston Centre were informed they would now be reporting to non discipline specific site based managers. This decision threatened to undermine members’ professional responsibilities and duties as many VPA members could now be reporting to nurses. Furthermore members employed in sub acute streams might now find themselves being directed to undertake acute caseloads. The Union wrote to the CEO seeking an impact statement and details over the proposed changes. A subsequent meeting of VPA and MSAV members at both Kingston and Dandenong Hospital highlighted further flaws in the proposed “realignment” of reporting lines. As a result of our intervention we are pleased to report that psychologists employed at Kingston and Dandenong will continue to report to psychologists. Furthermore SH assured us there would no alteration to current responsibilities and duties.
